Geocaching
The sport of Geocaching began in 2000 when Dave Ulmer hid the first cache and posted the GPS coordinates on the Internet, calling it "Great American GPS Stash Hunt". Today Geocaches can be found almost everywhere including six at Shaw Nature Reserve. To find these caches you need a GPS unit and the coordinates where they are hidden. When you find a cache you take an item and leave one in its place, also sign the register. Please keep all geocaches in their original location. Find these 6 listed below and then log on to http://www.geocaching.com/ to find more all over the world.
Shaw #1
N 38° 28.576 W 090° 49.502
UTM: 15S E 689725 N 4260901
This is located in the Wildflower Garden. Take some time to walk the trail there are a lot of pretty flowers and some really nice water gardens. You do not have to get off the pavement to reach the cache.
Shaw #2
N 38° 28.038 W 090° 49.526
UTM: 15S E 689713 N 4259905
This is the second one in the Shaw series. This one is located in the Pine Amphitheater. It is not shown on the map but it is located South of the prairie on the West side of the property. You can ride your bike to within 25 feet of the cache.
Shaw #3
N 38° 27.974 W 090° 49.242
UTM: 15S E 690129 N 4259796
This is the third one in the Shaw series. This one is located at the Crescent Knoll Overlook. You can reach it without leaving the trail. So please stay on the trail. Take some time and enjoy the view. The staff and many volunteers spent more hours than could be counted over the last two winters clearing all of the cedar trees that took over this glade.
Shaw #4
N 38° 27.794 W 090° 48.889
UTM: 15S E 690650 N 4259475
This is the fourth one in the Shaw series. This one is located on the Overlook Trail. It is on top of a bluff but not near the edge so there is no reason to get very close to the edge. Please be careful and keep children away from the edge of the bluff. While we were looking for the best spot we found something with this tree that doesn't belong there. We didn't put it there but it made us wonder how it got there. If you e-mail us what it is we found you can log a bonus find. Please do not remove the item.
Shaw #5
N 38° 28.513 W 090° 48.431
UTM: 15S E 691285 N 4260821
This is the fifth one in the Shaw series. This one is located in the Wetland Observation Blind. If you come in the fall you might get to watch some ducks taking a break from their trip south, or maybe a Great Blue Heron feeding in the shallows. Take some time and enjoy the wetlands. They are full of interesting plants and animals.
Shaw #6
N 38° 28.752 W 090° 49.495
UTM: 15S E 689727 N 4261226
This is the sixth one in the Shaw series. This one is located near a Cane Break next to Pinetum Lake. You can reach it without going into the Cane. Please do not walk in the Cane because it will get trampled. There are some really large Bald Cypress trees growing around the lake.
